In my opinion the finest live album of the 70's, 'Live & Dangerous' by 'Thin Lizzy' and ' UFO's Strangers in the Night' are both superb offerings but this is the one that really gets my vote. The track listing is absolutely bang on and features all the best cuts from their last four studio albums and all bar none are played with more energy and gusto. The production is very good for 79' with tracks flowing into each other seamlessly and overall goes to make for a monumental album in the history of Heavy Metal. It has been rumoured that the 'Rob's' vocals were added later due to equipment failure during the live recording, whatever that case, it can't distract from the pure excellence of this album.
First off is a brisk run-through of 'Exciter' a cracking studio track that is played here with more intensity, the heavy rhythm work makes this feel a lot heavier and is complimented by 'Rob's' stunning vocals. Even better is the belting rendition of the 'Killing Machine' classic 'Running Wild' a superb song that is performed to perfection with ripping guitar work and punishing rhythm. Continuing is fine form is 'Sinner' this live working is a lot heavier than the album counterpart and is laced with superb guitar effects and solos while featuring some of 'Rob's' best screeching. The ambience darkens with the first cut from 'Sad Wings of Destiny' 'The Ripper' and although later vocalist 'Tim Owens' made this his own, this classic line-up make a splendid job of it while leaving out the unnecessary sound effects that the original comprised. The quality continues with 'The Green Manalishi', one of 'Priest's' best covers that just sounds awesome live, slightly more distortion is felt on this rendition that definitely gives it the edge over the 'Killing Machine' original. The pace drops for a cover of 'Joan Baez's' 'Diamonds and Rust' and as with all these versions this is more lively than the 'Sin after Sin' rendering, with heavier riffs and rhythm. 'Victim of Changes' follows and fails to disappoint with it's hard hitting approach and mighty vocals which superbly contrast the slower sections. Next up is 'Genocide' and this just rips like an industrial shredder, ultra heavy compared to the original with punishing pace complimenting thumping riffs to make for a stunning rendition. Last up is the classic 'Tyrant' which has been dealt the 'Genocide' treatment making this harder, brisker and sporting blazing fret work- another masterpiece!
The bonus tracks with some of the 'Judas Priest' remasters are a little disappointing as certain songs aren't of the same period as the album, but the ones featured here are quite superb and blend in seamlessly with the original tracks. In fact I believe these four tracks originally appeared on the Japanese version of 'Unleashed in the East'. First up is 'Rock Forever' a mid tempo rocker which works very well live, this version feel fairly carefree but still retains plenty of energy. 'Delivering the Goods' continues and ebbs and flows just like the studio counterpart and makes for another quality cut. 'Hell Bent for Leather' is next and surprises me it didn't feature on the album proper, fast, gutsy and thoroughly superb while the final cut 'Starbreaker' is a strong improvement over the original with its heavier more uncompromising approach.
Released in 79' and has lost very very little over the years a masterpiece that was hugely important to the development of Metal on both sides of the Atlantic. You don't have an excuse for not owning a copy!
