Being from the late 70's early 80's you would probably expect a NWOBHM sound from 'Gillan' but that's not the case, expect hard rocking but with a quirky edge. At the time Gillan was branded as 'Cock Rock'.

'Second sight' starts off as an eerie instrumental, that mellows to a light weight keyboard piece, this leaves you off balance as the full-on hard rocking 'Secret of the Dance' pounds your speakers. 'Roller' is a driving, bass heavy romp and my pick of the album. Other cracking songs include the title track which is sung with total conviction and the aggressive full blooded 'Vengeance'. 'Dead of Night' is a nice plodding number, but the lyrics are a little weak. The album closes with 'Fighting Man' a slower number that is sung with real emotion, the playing on this track also illustrates what a talented outfit 'Gillan' were.

Any 'Deep Purple' fans or those with a passion for uncompromising 'Hard Rock' should lap this up and any of 'Gillan's' later work as there's plenty more decent tracks to come from 'Glory Road', 'Double Trouble' and 'Future Shock'.
