I've only one bad thing to say about this album and that's with reference to the abysmal cover artwork, wouldn't something like 'a hammer on anvil' have been more appropriate for an album titled 'Thundersteel' and less like an issue of 'Captain Marvellous'. Other than that, it's an absolute gem, I brought a mint vinyl copy for four quid, on name alone, and it blow me away at the first listen as this is early 'Power Metal' of the highest calibre. A comeback album for 'Riot' after a 6 year release hiatus, and they don't disappoint, considering this is a new lineup, you couldn't tell as the band tear through the tracks with abandon.
The blazing title track opens the album, with its rapid guitaring, great heavy drum work, and quirky but solid, high pitch vocals. 'Fight or Fall' continues in similar fashion, with its neck wrenching heavy rhythm and blistering guitar work- 'Mark Reale' is such an underrated guitarist. 'Sign of the Crimson Storm' is my favourite, slightly darker than the other tracks, features some great powerful lyrics, an irresistible plodding beat, the mid solo is a delight and vocals are top notch. 'Flight of the Warrior' is a rhythm heavy number with a tantalising sing-a-long chorus, blazing guitar work and is one of many highlights seen here. 'On Wings of Eagles' again emphasis's superb shredding axe work, with a great solo and solid driving bass. 'Johnny's Back' is a great flowing rhythmic number, that's let down a little by the basic lyrics. 'Bloodstreets' builds from an acoustic intro, into an emotionally sung slow plodder, that is soundly penned and well performed. 'Run for your Life' is a basic rocker, with a big chorus, and strong guitaring. The album closes with the epic 'Buried Alive', which features a dialogue filled intro, that develops to a nasty doom laden plodder, supported by a constant 'death toll' ringing. The song closes with shouting from someone being buried alive but this is overpowered later by party sounds- Extremely Eerie, overall a great track if maybe a little long winded.
This disc is a real hidden classic and one of those albums that never made it big, but should of, a bit like 'Riot' really. Plenty more ripping cuts in future releases too, not to mention some great 'Hard Rock / Metal' in their back catalogue, fans of 'Power Metal' should not overlook their 90's releases either.
