The first outing of Bruce's solo career and an unexpected style deviation from the 'Iron Maiden' legend, those who expected epic 'Maiden' style 'Power Metal' like I did, will be in for a shock. This is a polished collection of middleweight rockers, 'Bon Jovi' style, but with the crunch of Bruce's killer vocals. Although a consistent offering that plods along nicely, lacks a couple of memorable tracks, the type that stick in your mind hours after the album has finished. The production is squeaky clean, and gives it a more commercial feel, although the boys have their moments where they do manage to rock out.

'Son of a Gun' kicks starts us off, an unusual choice for a opener, an emotional slow builder, that highlights Bruce's voice is on top form, singing with real passion, a solid number but gets a bit drawn out and repetitive near the end though. The title track is a upbeat romp with a big chorus, but feels forced to me and written for chart success, which incidentally it achieved, reaching No.18 in the UK charts. 'Born in 58' is a fair slower number, but the song writing is terribly blatant and totally ruins it for me. 'Hell on Wheels' is a improvement and features almost 'rap' like vocal portions, aggressively sung and backed up with a strong chorus. My pick of the disc surprisingly is the comical 'Dive! Dive! Dive!', a sound chugging rocker, with humorous lyrics and strong rhythm work, check out the amusing voice-over at the end. 'All the Young Dudes' is a cover of 'Mott the Hoople's' big hit written by 'David Bowie', Bruce does a respectable version keeping closely to the original but sounding all the better with his voice behind it. 'Lickin' the Gun' is lyrically shoddy and is only saved by some substantial guitar work. Other strong cuts include the enjoyable upbeat romp 'Zulu Lulu', the accurately executed ballad 'Gypsy Road' and the closing well written rocker 'No Lies'.

Mr. Dickinson doesn't quite get it right on this release, but later albums exhibit more 'Maiden' influence and rock harder and better than this mild effort. Dickinson stalwarts will want a copy but any fan of traditional 'Metal' should have his later albums in their collection.
