The third and final 'Dio' album featuring guitarist 'Vivian Campbell', and supposedly the split was less than amicable. A more commercial release than the previous 'Last in Line' or 'Holy Diver' but there's enough strong cuts to keep this release above the ordinary. 'Dio's' voice is as always strong and powerful, but the irresistible thought of chart success has deteriorated some lyrics to predictable clichéd rubbish.
The opener 'King of Rock and Roll' is a good solid rocker with hefty chorus and flowing rhythm, the intro features an over-dubbed crowd, which gives the impression that this is recorded live, which of course its not, the purpose of this is unknown as it adds little to the song. The title track is a plodding semi-epic, plenty of nice guitar licks along the way and 'Dio' sings with real passion and power, but overall a little drawn out with lyrics that are a bit obvious. 'Rock 'n' Roll Children' is my favourite track, plenty of well implemented keyboards, some sweet axe work and 'Dio's voice really powering through the lyrics. 'Hungry for Heaven' is very commercial sounding, good though, with nice sing-a-long lyrics, sweet guitar solo and a light, rolling rhythm. Other solid tracks include the chorus heavy 'Another Lie', the pulsing 'Like the Beat of a Heart' and the fast paced 'Just another Day' with dazzling guitaring. 'Fallen Angels' is another solid plodder, more aggressive with nasty lyrics and 'Vivian Campbell' showing why he was one of the top guitarist at the time. The album closes with easily the worst track, 'Shoot Shoot', its poorly written, unimaginative and just a tedious listen.
Not one of 'Dio's' best but still a consistent release, unfortunately the last with 'Vivian Campbell' as he went on to join 'Whitesnake' and later 'Def Leppard'.
