Well who could write a bad review about a 'Motörhead' album. Hell not me I wouldn't dare, have you seen Lemmy!. Joking apart after their brilliant run of albums in the earlier 80's this is a bit of a let down. Although there's still plenty of characteristic headbangers, the quality is not up to the likes of 'Ace of Spades', 'Overkill' or 'Bomber', and this release will go down as one of their leased focused efforts.
The album thunders off in typical style with the title track, a solid rocker and a good opener with plenty of punishing rhythm and although the lyrics are basic, they are catchy. 'Eat the Rich' is lyrically better, but musical fails in my estimation, it manages to maintain a dull and effortless plod throughout and thankfully is only resurrected by the mid track instrumental break. Marginally better is 'Blackheart', but even this ends up repetitive and again the only highlight is the guitar solo. It all comes good on 'Stone Deaf in the USA' though, this is my pick of the album, with its great grooving rhythm, sweet headbanging riffage and choice lyrics. 'The wolf' is a pretty bog-standard 'Motörhead' rocker, good but unremarkable, not sure about the intro, it appears to be a comical sketch courtesy of ex Monty Python's 'Michael Palin'. More impressive is riff snappy rocker 'Traitor', a lyrically aggressive number that 'Lemmy' does justice to. 'Dogs' feels a bit lacklustre to me and although it contains some quality song writing, overall is a arduous listen. The more commercial sounding 'All for You' nearly comes off, the grooving rhythm is reminiscent of early 'Stones' and is quite catchy. 'Boogeyman' has a nice flow, but the chorus feels way too repetitive, the axe work is solid throughout though.
If you were thinking of getting into 'Motörhead', this album would not make a great staring point, their early 80's material is much better.
