The second 'Motörhead' album, and the boys certainly don't disappoint, by this release they have firmly established their trademark style. The pace is rapid, with bass and drum laying down strong rhythms, guitaring fast but not too flashy, vocals as distinctive as any other around and all this combined with song writing that is influenced heavily by 'Rock 'n' Roll' and a splattering of 'Punk'.
With the exception of the 'Punk' scene there was little around in 79' to compete with the speed and distortion exhibited in this early classic, which makes 'Overkill' a pretty ground breaking album.
The furious 'Filthy Animal Taylor' drum intro lets you know 'Motörhead' mean business as they plough into the opener 'Overkill', a blistering "pedal to the metal" classic, with memorable driving rhythm, gutsy lyrics and thundering drum work. The pace is dropped slightly for the nasty groover 'Stay Clean', which features a short 'Hawkwind' inspired instrumental break and energetic stop start rhythm. Next up is '(I won't) Pay your Price' an enjoyable upbeat romp, upheld by pulsing guitar work and strong chorus. The plodding speciality 'I'll be your Sister' follows and is fuelled by both strong bass work and steadfast drumming. The live staple 'Capricorn' closes the first half of the album, with a more diverse, mystical approach and most of the credit goes to 'Fast Eddie Clark', who's 'Cream' style guitaring gives this beauty an extra dimension. The second half opens up with two of my favourite 'Motörhead' numbers, 'No Class' is just pure class, the heavy pulsing rhythm is infectious and combining this with great lyrics and superb guitar work is just a brilliant track. The headbanging 'Damage Case' follows in similar fashion with thumping beat, hearty chorus and strong instrumental solo. 'Tear Ya Down' and 'Limb from Limb' are both quality rockers, the latter featuring a couple of hearty solos, from 'Fast Eddie Clark' and 'Lemmy'. 'Metropolis' is more original, and again shows more than a little influence from 'Hawkwind', but is still a great number and a popular live choice, with solid guitar work and an almost psychedelic feel.
One of many early winners from 'Motörhead' and plenty more to come, from one of the most illustrious 'British Metal' bands around.
