Regrettably this would turn out to be the last full release from 'Led Zeppelin' as drummer 'John Bonham' sadly passed away shortly after this release which resulted in the band disbanding. As with 'Presence' the 'Zeppelin' sound has evolved and moved away from the harder sounds of 'Physical Graffiti' and 'Zep IV' and here we have a more mainstream synthesiser friendly sound. In all honesty It's pretty fair to say that by this release the best years were behind them and although there's some decent offerings present, this can't compete with their best.
The mystical sounding intro to 'In the Evening' kicks the album off strongly, a riff heavy rocker with a solid plod yet relaxed flow, although 'Robert Plant's' vocals seem a bit distant in the mix at times, this is a decent opener. Next up is 'South Bound Saurez' a light-hearted piano led track which has Southern Blues undercurrents combined with more modern guitar work, not really a typical track from these Hard Rock legends. Continuing with the carefree approach is 'Fool in the Rain' a fairly tame and disappointing track, which definitely has some Reggae influence. More upbeat is the brisk paced 'Hot Dog' a country style rocker with a certain 'Elvis' feel, it's not as bad as it sounds though, with some comical lyrics and sweet melody. Following on is 'Carouselambra' a synthesiser fuelled epic, that sadly turns out vastly inferior to previous classics, the main problem is that damn synthesiser I wish someone would have pulled the plug on 'John Paul Jones' machine, as it becomes extremely irritating over nearly the full 10 minutes and distracts from some cracking vocals and nice fret work. Much superior is 'All my Love' and while it sees 'Zeppelin' taking a more commercial stance it's a superbly penned classic, the song was written in memory of 'Robert Plant's' son and they make a superb job of it. Lastly we are gifted the bluesy 'I'm Gonna Crawl' a track which harks back to their earliest material, this is a subtle laid-back track which is superbly sung and performed.
Although there are still glimpses of their pass glories, seven tracks makes this offering a bit light. Had they known this would be their final album I'm sure this would have been a more memorable release and in all honesty is probably one of their weakest, especial for those who like their more up tempo material.
