The last 'UFO' album to feature former 'Scorpions' guitarist 'Michael Schenker' (well until he rejoins) and as with so many of their previous releases, there's a good mix of classic material and mediocre offerings.

The live staple 'Only you can Rock Me' opens the album, this version lacks a bit of pace compared to the live renditions, but is still a good track, full of 'Schenker's' trademark fret work, flowing lyrics and solid vocals throughout. Continuing in good form is the plodding but jazzy 'Pack it Up', the strong driving drum work is slightly reminiscent of some of Zeppelins' material. The out of place 'Arbory Hill' is a short 'Schenker' written instrumental that has a certain "Traditional American" feel about it. The 'Zeppelin' handbook is again put to good use on the slow churning 'Ain't No baby', but it's still a characteristic lightweight 'UFO' number. The experimental 'Lookin' out for No.1' doesn't really come off in my opinion, the chart friendliness is uncharacteristic at this stage of their careers, and is ultimately a flop as is the later instrumental reprise. Much better is the upbeat rocker 'Hot 'n Ready', with its fine driving rhythm, inventive hooks and catchy lyrics. 'You don't Fool Me' is an overlooked gem and features the best guitaring on the album, the soloing is tremendous and only adds to this already excellent song- my pick of the disc. Other enjoyable tracks include the well developed country sounding 'Cherry' and the closing ballad 'Born to Lose'. 'One more for the Rodeo' although pretty predictable isn't as bad as it sounds, the rhythm laid down it pretty mean, with vocals and guitaring that are steadfast and complimentary.

As with most 'UFO' albums there's a good mix and 'Obsession' is no exception, it all comes good though with the following live release 'Strangers in the Night', but that's another review.
