'Udo Dirkschneider' returns to the fold for 93's comeback album 'Objection Overruled', this being the first release since the ill fated 'Eat the Heat' fronted by 'David Reece'. 'Objection' is a more back to roots release and fortunately the commercial sounding tracks from the predecessor do not rear their ugly heads. Regrettably though the song writing has improved little and in all honesty the penmanship is probably worse than 'Eat the Heat', this however is made up for by the unmistakable 'Udo' vocals and more consistent heavy approach provided by all but one of the essential lineup.
The title track acts as the opener and launches the album off on a very high note. 'Objection Overruled' is probably the best song present, lyrically and musically it's pretty basic, but is driven by a sublime grooving rhythm, not unlike some of AC/DC's classic material, 'Udo' sounds strong especially on the cracking chorus and it all comes together excellently for one of the finest cuts of the album. 'I Don't Wanna be Like You' follows but this isn't quite on a par with the title track, lyrically it's unimaginative and the chorus is overused and weak, the melody however is better with another solid groove throughout, interspersed with a fine instrumental break. The pace is picked up for the crunchy 'Protectors of Terror', this number has the makings of a decent cut but is spoilt by the feeble, trite chorus and poor vocal effects. Improvements are made with the nasty 'Slaves to Metal', a track which definitely owes a little to 'Priest's' 'Painkiller' and while it's not up to the classics of that release, it's a hearty effort and one of the most punishing numbers present complete with a quality instrumental wind down. Not too sure where they were going with 'All or Nothing', reminds me of some of 'U.D.O.'s more recent work only not as good, the vocal harmonies sound dated and this makes for an odd mid tempo affair. A light vocal intro announces 'Bulletproof', another cut with potential, that ultimately falls flat with some of the worst lyrics on the album, as with most of the tracks 'Wolf Hoffmann' puts in a strong show but even he can't resurrect the weak penmanship here. The tempo drops for 'Objection Overruled's' only ballad 'Amamos La Vida', a fair track which sees 'Udo' putting plenty of passion in his vocals but all told sounds like a 'Scorpions' rip-off. It's back to the rockers with the simplistic but raw 'Sick, Dirty and Mean' 'Udo' again works the almost comical lyrics exceptionally well and the backing vocal harmonies work much better here, this is tied together with crunching rhythm and sweet fret work. 'AC/DC' territory is well explored with the plodding 'Donation' and the shoddy penmanship also matches their more recent material- shocking. Next up is the instrumental 'Just by my Own' and this more laid back melody has a splattering of the 'Scorpions' about it, a fair effort if not a little tame. 'This Ones for You' closes the album respectably with blistering guitaring, screaming vocals, hell bent rhythm and the usual predictable lyrics but by now who cares- just rock away to one of the album highlights!
With 'Accept' you pretty much know what you are going to get, especially with 'Udo' fronting them. In my opinion this isn't them at their best, but with a group as steeped in Metal history as 'Accept' you know they will still come up with some quality and that is what we have here.
