'Yngwie's' second album and probably one of his best. The guitar work is as normal spectacular, but it's the rest of the line-up that make the difference, 'Jeff Scott Soto' is in my opinion the best vocalist to work with 'Yngwie', and his contribution to the song writing is underestimated and well missed, Jens Johanssen is undoubtedly one of the top keyboard players around and 'Anders Johansson' and 'Marcel Jacob' are both accomplished musicians. The songs are as normal, heavily based on mythology and the supernatural, but unlike a lot of future albums a more accessible trade off between guitar solos and solidly written tracks is accomplished.
After a fairly uneventful building intro, titled 'Prelude', the excellent 'I'll see the Light, Tonight' blasts out of your speakers, a very well written number, with trademark rapid scale work, top harmonious vocals and is overall one of 'Yngwie's' most catchy songs. The pace is dropped down for the rolling rocker 'Don't let it End', 'Jeff Scott Soto' again shines through with his silky smooth vocals. An acoustic guitar intro kicks of 'Disciples of Hell', a nasty plodder, with a blistering axe solo, Yngwie' style. 'I am a Viking' is lyrically weak and sounds very awkward, the guitaring is as always splendid but even this can't save this clumsy effort. 'Overture 1383' is pure neo-classical 'Malmsteen' but the early shredding dies back to a fairly run-of-the-mill slower number, and leaves you expecting a bit more. The tempo kicks back in for the delightful 'Anguish and Fear', a strongly written and performed shred fest. Following in similar fashion but even better is 'On the Run Again' a rollicking number that is reminiscent of 'Dio', but more grooving. 'Soldier without Faith' is less interesting, the intro is fairly dull, longwinded and the composition makes for an arduous listen. The catchy 'Caught in the Middle' is a improvement with it top guitaring, strong chorus and driving rhythm. Closing the album is the title track, a guitar fuelled instrumental that winds down from a frenzied opening to a delectable laid back number.
Definitely one of 'Yngwie's' better albums, that no fan should be without, anyone who appreciates speed guitaring should also check out this shred heavy treat. Unfortunately this would be the last full album for vocalist 'Jeff Scott Soto', and a host of others would try their hand at the frontman's slot.
