Iron Maiden's earliest release and the start of a long run of classics, this album features one time guitarist 'Dennis Stratton', who would be replaced by the influential 'Adrian Smith' after this release. The frontman for this and the next album is 'Paul Di'Anno', and out of the two, I have a preference for this one, although this is usually against the consensus. Three or four tracks here are still on the play list today, which tells you how influential this album is, abate its very average production, this is still one of the best NWOBHM records to be released.

My choice for best track is 'Phantom of the Opera' as its an amazing guitar fest that boarders on the epic, you don't expect intricacy like this from an early 80's 'British Metal' group, but here it is! Watch out for brilliant riff work, great challenging duel guitars and the indicative head-banging rhythm that would later be Maiden's trademark. 'Transylvania' is another great instrumental, that blisters along in fine fashion with great axe work and top-notch drumming. 'Strange World' is an unusual piece which sounds reminiscent to some of 'Budgies' work, it could be classed as filler, but I find it a great lighter number that breaks the album up admirably. Especially nice are the subtle vocals that cut in after an acoustic guitar intro and I just enjoy the whole laid back approach to this song. 'Running Free' is still a live favourite and its little surprise with its great pounding rhythm, heavy chorus and sing-a-long lyrics. This was the first of many single releases from Iron Maiden, a live version was also released in 85', but with 'Bruce Dickinson' at the helm. Other notable songs include the fast paced opener 'Prowler', the building 'Remember Tomorrow' and the amusing tale of a prostitute 'Charlotte the Harlot'. Closing the album is the title track which is an all out simplistic full-blooded rocker.

If you like Iron Maiden or are just a fan of NWOBHM, you should have this in your collection. Check out the next release too, as this has 'Adrian Smith' on guitar and is produced by the legendary 'Martin Birch'.
