New singer, new logo, new style, new abysmal album. I'm afraid this review is going to upset a few Priest fans, but I really don't like this offering. Surprisingly though I am a fan of Rob Halford's replacement 'The Ripper Owens' though more about that later.
The majority of songs can easily be lumped into the same bag, poorly written, lacking any of the classic Priest we all love and in a modern style that seems to be aimed at the crap-metal buying youth. With song titles like 'Dead Meat', 'Decapitate' and 'Brain Dead', I can't see fans that appreciated the well crafted Priest classics like 'Stained Class' and 'British Steel' giving this album a second glance and guitarists in their mid-fifties won't appeal to 'Korn' loving teenagers.
The vocals on most tracks are limited to a growling snarl, but 'Ripper Owens' has got a wonderful voice with a great range (this is evident when he sings old Priest classics). He is more than up to producing a similar sound to Rob Halford, including that famous screech. Ok the bloke wants to forge his own distinctive sound, but hell not this tripe and not with Tipton and the boys.
The only notable song on the whole disc, 'Burn in Hell' is a real belter, it boasts a plodding bass line, that builds into a total burn out, 'Owens' voice is crisp and powerful and the song is well structured. Cathedral Spires is more subtle than the other tracks, and is similar to what you will find on Priest's next release, but at over 9 minutes is long winded.
