Another lightweight 'Pop-Metal' offering from Winger, unfortunately this is even blander than their debut. The tasty hooks that were present are less noticeable and I feel 'Reb Beach' has been stifled on this release. This was another million seller for 'Winger', but with more balladsy material and an increase in keyboards it makes for a pretty tame effort.
'Can't Get Enuff' is a reasonably good opening track, the rhythm section holds a fine groove throughout, the vocal harmonies are solid and the chorus is catchy to boot. Less effective is 'Loosen Up', a carefree romp that is basically written and with the exception of a couple of nice hooks is pretty unremarkable. The "Gulf War" anthem 'Miles Away' is a tame 'Bon Jovi' style ballad, chart success guaranteed, but ultimately uninteresting and definitely not one for headbangers. 'Easy Come Easy Go', is regrettable not a cover of the 'Tesla' classic, but it is still one of the sharpest cuts present. More upbeat than most tracks and driven by a solid chug which combines some decent lyrics and nice arrangements for a sharply executed number. The best cut of the album is easily the 'Dokken' sounding 'In the Day we'll Never See' which builds from a brooding intro, into a sweet rocker laced with top vocals, fine lyrics and is about the only track 'Reb Beach' is allowed a free roam on. Less impressive is the sleep inducing 'Rainbow in the Rose', the dull ballad 'Under one Condition', the repetitive 'You are the Saint I am the Sinner' and the lacklustre title track. 'Little Dirty Blonde' while hardly a classic makes for a nice change after all the ballads and takes the form of a 'Mötley Crüe' influenced carefree rocker, that while quite repetitive is fairly enjoyable. The rap influenced 'Baptised by Fire', kicks off with some nice fret work but soon goes down hill rapidly when the lyrics cut in.
When the changing face of Metal turned its back on the 'Hair metal' scene I was gutted as loads of my favourite groups called it a day or changed their style. In 'Wingers' case it was the best thing that happened (in my opinion) as the next release was a great turn around as the group toughened up their sound and cut a great disc. As with their debut this release is strictly for pop-metal fans!
