A really comprehensive live release from the 'Prog Metal' masters, that spans two CDs worth of material. Split into four 'Suites', 'E.P. / Warning / Rage', 'Mindcrime', 'Empire / Promised Land' and 'HITNF / Q2K', we are gifted with a generous helping from all of 'Queensrÿche's' albums. Recorded over two nights at Seattle's 'Moore Theatre' while touring with 'Iron Maiden' and 'Halford', who incidentally have both released albums from the tour.
A live album that is certain to please fans, as there is little 'Queensrÿche' live material kicking around. However despite a solid all round performance and excellent production and continuity, the album doesn't quite cut it with me. The first thing that strikes you is 'Geoff Tate's' voice, he just doesn't have the power and range that he once had. Don't get me wrong, he stills sounds good, but on songs like 'Queen of Ryche', the vocals sound laboured and lacking passion, the original version features 'Tate' ripping through the song with abandon. Also absent is the live feel, the crowd are pretty quite and the audience interaction is almost non existent. The absence of Chris DeGarmo is also felt, but the loss of such a skilled and influential member is bound to have an impact.
For me the most enjoyable part, is the 'Mindcrime Suite', although a bridged version, in which quite a few important track are missing, it still links together very well. 'Queensrÿche' pretty much rip through this section from front to back, mind you they've had enough experience. The early stuff present, lacks the rawness of the originals and this is especially prevalent on 'Queen of Ryche' and 'The lady Wore Black'. The later tracks sound better than the studio versions, but I still can't get into the 'Hear in the Now Frontier' and 'Q2K' songs. Considering this is a live album, it comes to a very abrupt ending, no play-out or fans cheering, just a dead stop- strange decision.
'Queensr˙che' fans will want a copy, but personally I would choose 'Operation Livecrime' before this.
