The third outing for these understated 'Hair Metal' specialists, with a release that is slightly more commercial than their debut 'kix' and 'Cool Kids'. However the slick production, numerous tasty hooks and inventive song structures combine to make this an enjoyable and interesting release.
Catchy choruses is the "name of the game" for this album, and none more so, than the superb opening title track, a cracking number with an infectious melody, the type that sticks around in your head all day, the guitar work is strong and grooving with 'Steve Whiteman's' vocals really hitting the spot. Less memorable is 'Red Hot', the song writing is predictable, some lyrics sound disjoined and overall offers no lasting memories. The Carefree rocker 'Band Bang (Balls of fire)' is a big improvement, crude yes, but still an enjoyable sing-a-long, with driving rhythm and characteristic vocals. My top pick of the album goes to 'Layin' Rubber', an enthralling track, that features a ripping intro, tantalising choruses and some great harmonies. The average intro to 'Walkin' Away' doesn't prepare you for this top drawer ballad, the levels of emotion displayed make this a very powerful song, the keyboard work is a real pleasure and the heartfelt vocals are a delight. 'Cry Baby' is another solid track, an upbeat rocker, with amusing lyrics and grooving melody. Other tasty titbits include the 'catchy sing-a-long 'Scarlet Fever', the pulsing groover 'Cold Shower', the riff filled rocker 'Lie Like a Rug' and the raunchy closer 'Sex'.
If you enjoy groups like 'Ratt', 'Cinderella' and 'Motley Crue' you should definitely check out 'Kix', one of the most aspiring and underrated groups of their genre.
