'If it ain't Broke, Break It' is the first offering from the 'Lizzy Borden' spin-off group 'Starwood' and this is vastly different from the likes of 'Deal with the Devil' or 'Love you to Pieces'. As 'Lizzy' and Co. explore a Traditional Hard Rock sound with some modern elements thrown in, overall the material draws from a lot of artists, in particular 'Alice Cooper', 'Kiss', 'Cheap Trick' and 'Aerosmith' along with some of the older more mainstream Punk groups. The majority of tracks feature plenty of backing vocal support, which further takes away the 'Lizzy Borden' feel, but 'Lizzy's' vocals still manage to shine through.

The 'Alice Cooper' sounding 'Subculture' opens affairs in lively fashion, as 'Starwood' balance a traditional feel with some modern Punky elements, it all comes together pretty well, with hard hitting rhythm work and a solid blend of vocals, lyrically it's all been done before, but still a decent opener. Ensuing in a carefree manner is 'Won't Back Down', a mid paced rocker with a light-hearted feel, a respectable offering graced with some fine guitar work, but all told not particularly memorable. Slightly into 'Lizzy Borden' territory is the moody pulsating 'What's your Damage' a more atmospheric piece complete with cutting vocals and a great guitar solo, to help make this the main album highlight. Things rapidly go down-hill with the repetitive and borderline embarrassing 'All my Girlfriends have Boyfriends', the chorus is pretty awful and only saved by an 'Aerosmith' style chug. Improvements are quickly made with the more modern sounding 'Social Zero', I'm not overly impressed with the intro, but when 'Lizzy's' vocals cut in, we are graced with a well sung rocker. Next up is the title track which sounds like 'Alice Cooper' meets 'Kiss', regrettably it doesn't take the best of these groups, as 'Starwood' get lost in a repetitive mid tempo no-mans-land. Progress is made with 'Backlash' a raw rocker with Punk undertones and solid all round vocals contributions, while 'You're so Real' is a light-hearted yet enjoyable jam session. Lastly we are gifted 'Bad Machine' a slightly rawer track, graced with a catchy chorus, strong backing vocals and some quality guitar work.

Overlooking the fact that the running time is only 33 minutes (the cost of the CD takes this into consideration), this is a pretty interesting side project, but as it stands interesting is about as good as it gets. There's some decent carefree rockers present, but in my opinion nothing leaves any lasting memories and this might just be a case of jumping on the 'Velvet Revolver' bandwagon. A bit harsh… possibly but I hope 'Lizzy' brings back 'Lizzy Borden' proper for his next release!
