Uriah Heep:- Abominog

Release:- 1982
Band Members:- Peter Goalby, Mick Box, John Sinclair, Bob Daisley, Lee Kerslake
Krillion's Rating:- 80%

Uriah Heep's comeback album and probably one of their best. Gone are the slow plodding 'Progressive Rock' tracks, here we have a fresher, more open sound, with aspects of the then prevalent 'NWOBHM' sound, while still remaining true to the 'Uriah Heep' style. 'Mike Box' had to bring in new faces for this album, and an excellent job he did too, bassist Bob Daisley joined after leaving 'Ozzy Osbourne', drummer 'Lee Kerslake' returned to the fold, former 'Lion's' keyboard man 'John Sinclair' arrived, but the surprise package is the very accomplished ex 'Trapeze' vocalist 'Peter Goalby'.

The riff driven 'Too Scared to Run', makes for a sharp opener, with its punchy guitaring and melodic chorus. 'Chasing Shadows' allows 'John Sinclair' to shine, as the keyboard work really enhances this track, but don't overlook 'Peter Goalby' displaying some great power vocals. 'Hot Night in a Cold Town' is a slower balladsy number, which is passionately sung and performed with great conviction. 'That's the Way that it is' has a commercial feel, but is catchy with its sharp keyboards and flowing rhythm. 'Prisoner' is a nice builder, that is well written, but a little pop orientated for my liking. Other distinct cuts include, the catchy chorus heavy 'On the Rebound', the solid rocker 'Running all Night', the tasty 'Hot Persuasion' with its sweet guitar licks and the variety packed 'Sell your Soul'. The semi rocker / ballad 'Think it Over' concludes the album, and illustrates them really giving it all, this track oozes emotion.

The album cover was voted second worst for an 82' release- Nonsense one of the best of all time, in my opinion. A real polished effort and fans of 'Heep', 'British Metal' and 'NWOBHM', will want a copy of this, those who like their Metal with maximum punch might want to skip it though, you will find it a little light. A remastered version is available, with extra tracks including the E.P. 'Abominog Junior', released before the album which contains an interesting cover of the 'Small Faces' 'Tin Soldier' and a nice heavy romp called 'Son of a Bitch'.
